Liam H. Dooley is proud to announce his lately writing accomplishment! I have just completed and released a new book:
Seizing Washington: Overthrowing the US President
I have taken a break from creative writing to delve into the area of political science and current events. (Spoiler: this book is not for/against this or any US President). The summary/intro is here:
America has never experienced a coup d’état, but that does not mean it never will. These days, Off with his head! may resonate more strongly amongst some Americans than, in Abraham Lincoln’s words, The ballot is stronger than the bullet.
How could opponents of the President of the United States of America overthrow him or her by the use of force? What kind of combat forces would the coupists need, and what kind of opposition would they face? What would be the coup’s primary targets? Who would they need to recruit in order to create a viable, and relatively legitimate coup force and subsequent regime? And lastly, when would a coup be legitimate?
This non-partisan book attempts to address the above questions while taking into account key aspects of the US military, Washington Capital region geography, the organization of the US government, and American political society.
Seizing Washington: Overthrowing the US President is an important read for anyone looking to rapidly change the President through extra-Constitutional means – or anyone who would like prevent others from doing so.
I was inspired to write this book when I read Edward Luttwak’s Coup d’etat: A Practical Handbook. This book was a bit long-winded, and basically had nothing that was specific to the United States; but it was still interesting. But Luttwak led me to ask: how could a Coup d’Etatbe conducted in the USA?
I spent time researching and considering the issue: thus the book. This book covers a lot of issues but highlights include:
- Why would a coup be conducted
- Who would lead a coup
- What forces would be required to conduct a coup
- What would be the political and military strategies and tactics of a coup
- How will coupists consolidate power and rebuild the country?
I know that at first glance some people may think a) the book is rebellious and treasonous and b) I hate President Trump.
To start with the latter, the book should be relatively clear that it is not against Trump or any specific President in any way (and this author is a non-partisan independent). This is because the planning and execution of a coup do not change based on who is President. The causes for launching a coup can apply to any President: unpopularity, poor decisions, illegal actions, incompetence, corruption, threat of losing a major war, etc. Most of the coup targets and tactics will remain the same against any President. One can think of it like this: an amphibious invasion of a contested beachhead such as Normandy or Iwo Jima does not change because of who is President nor who the enemy leader is.
The book is not intended to be rebellious – and as mentioned in the intro, the concept or notion is important for anti-coup (loyalist) forces and the President. The US military regularly conducts war games, studies, and exercises to ascertain what an adversary would do, how they would do it, and if it would succeed. Red teams and OPFOR (Opposition Force) are two common terms in these endeavours. A comparable book or study might be about how Russia would invade the Baltics (https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_reports/RR1253.html) or how a war on the Korean Peninsula would unfold (https://www.rand.org/pubs/perspectives/PE262.html). Neither study advocates their subjects: a Russian invasion of the Baltics or war on the Korean Peninsula. Rather, they ask how these might happen and make some recommendations on how to counter it.
Seizing Washington is written in a similar vein – though tackling a relatively more original subject area.
The books are available on amazon.com (and the other amazons), and Apple iBook.
